Roasted turkey, savory side dishes, and decadent desserts, Thanksgiving is the time of year we look forward to a delicious meal shared with our loved ones. However, it is also the time of year unwanted pests try to gather around the table too. No need to fear though, we’ve got the scoop on what you can do to keep pests away from your Thanksgiving table this year:
While preparing for your Thanksgiving meal:
- Complete a thorough cleaning of the house, and make sure all areas that open to the outside are closed and sealed.
- Keep your trash sealed as you prep and cook foods, and take it out frequently. This will minimize the invitation for pests to join the party.
- CAYGO: Clean as you go! Don’t save all the cleaning for the end, do your best to clean up as you finish making dishes and before moving on to others.
- Be sure to wipe down all countertops and leave the sink clear of dirty dishes when you’re ready to serve.
During your Thanksgiving dinner:
- If you’re eating outside because of COVID, turn on fans. Flying insects do not thrive well in the wind.
- Use fresh herbs such as rosemary and basil in your centerpieces to keep bugs away.
- Try to contain where the eating happens. Select a few areas for eating, such as the dining room or back yard, and keep the other rooms of the house, such as bedrooms, food-free and with the doors closed.
- Be sure to cover dishes with lids, clear wrap, or foil to keep pests out and away.
The aftermath from your Thanksgiving Day meal:
- Wrap leftovers tightly and pack them away in sealed containers. Be sure to keep guests’ leftovers in the fridge until they are ready to go home.
- Wipe down any areas that were used for eating such as tables or bar-tops. If possible, do a quick sweep of the floors as well.
- Rinse off dirty plates, place them in the dishwasher if you can, and make sure all the trash is tied-up and taken out.
- Over the weekend, be sure to do a more thorough cleaning of the house and be sure to focus on cleaning the kitchen, floors, eating areas, and bathrooms.
